- A FLAT, HARD SURFACE – To assess the horse in hand.
- AN AREA WHERE THE HORSE CAN BE RIDDEN – In order to correctly fit a saddle to the highest possible standard, the horse must be ridden in the saddle by its usual rider to allow for dynamic assessment of the saddle.
- JUMPS – If a jump saddle is being assessed it is sometimes useful to see the horse being jumped in the saddle.
- RIDER’S PRESENCE – The saddle fitter must be able to see the saddle being ridden in by the usual rider as it it important that the saddle fits the rider as well as the horse. If the saddle does not fit the rider this can have negative implications for the horse.
- BE SUITABLY ATTIRED – Riding clothes are recommended with a correctly fitted riding hat.
- TACK – A saddle pad, girth, stirrups and stirrup leathers are required. Any pads/extra equipment being used with the saddle will be required at the fitting for the fitter to assess the fit of the saddle while using this equipment.
- PRESENTING A WELL GROOMED ANIMAL – This isn’t merely for cosmetic purposes. The marks left on a well groomed horse’s back after removing the saddle can be helpful in identifying any unwanted saddle movement.
